Pretty cool week. No time fishing though. This week was geared towards making art, packing for our trip to Thousand Islands and also hiking in Nature. It won’t be a very long article. I am actually writing this early Sunday morning and we are leaving soon for vacation.

The next article post vacation will be exponentially longer and more detailed than this one.

Wild edibles are popping up often now! Mock Strawberries and Wild Cherries. Absolutely delicious! I am torn at times with gathering. It is a new hobby so I am not always prepared with the proper containers to gather goods in. However, do I have the right to harvest a hundred cherries to feed myself? Or shall I leave them for the animals that need it more than myself? Another view I suppose is the happy middle ground which is to do as I have been; take just enough to eat or maybe a bit more and leave the rest.

As time goes on, I keep building the catalog in my head of various wild edibles. A pattern of harvesting is starting for me, as it has for fishing too. The more you pay attention to your environment, the more it will show and teach you.

Many beautiful wild flowers are blooming. Along with that the bees are doing their duty. We just passed June 21st the Summer Solstice yesterday; the longest day of daylight. This time of year leads to epic sunsets with bright colors.

The photos do only a little justice to the beauty we saw. It inspired me to do a drawing of it. That is what I do, I see something in Nature, it inspires me, intrigues me, then I study it and draw it. The bees really spoke to me this week, as well as the Lady bugs, maybe that will be the next project.

A new section I want to add to these weekly recaps is my favorite song from the week. This week’s pick is ‘Ride to Robert’s’ by Jason Isbell off his latest album Foxes in the Snow. I highly recommend listening to it. The whole album is solid front to back, but this song especially spoke to me. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

Also, a huge shout out to Miller’s Thumb Bakery on Highland in Tonawanda. They have the best baked goods, amazing coffees as well as a calming atmosphere and a wonderful staff. Here is where I am writing this article now and where most of my artwork gets done. If you live in Western New York, and like coffee or baked goods, you owe it to yourself to check it out!
